  1. Start the console session.

    Plug in serial cable to console port of device from PC COM1 port
    Open PuTTY and select "Serial" connection type, leave baud rate (Speed) and other settings as default.
    Plug power into device and if a power button exists, turn it on.
  2. Access the extended boot menu.

    When you see the line BootWare Validating... press Ctrl B only ONCE, before seeing any prompt to do so:

    Press Enter when prompted, if asked for BootRom password, leave it blank by just pressing Enter:

    Further output will take you to the extended bootware menu.
  3. Bypass configuration and boot up system.

    At the Enter your choice(0-9):  prompt type 7 to skip the current system configuration, and type y to confirm:
    BOOT MENU 1. Download application file to flash 2. Select application file to boot 3. Display all files in flash 4. Delete file from flash 5. Modify BootRom password 6. Enter BootRom upgrade menu 7. Skip current system configuration 8. Set BootRom password recovery 9. Set switch startup mode 0. Reboot Enter your choice(0-9): 7 The current setting will run with current configuration file when reboot. Are you sure you want to skip current configuration file when reboot? Yes or No (Y/N):Y Setting...Done!
    The same menu and prompt will appear, this time type 0 to reboot the system.

  4. Erase configuration and reboot.

    In case there's a backup file, type the reset saved-configuration backup command and type y to confirm:

    Type the reset saved-configuration backup command and type y to confirm:

    Type reboot and follow prompts to continue:
    <H3C>reboot Start to check configuration with next startup configuration file, please wait.........DONE! This command will reboot the device.     Repeat step 2 to access the extended boot menu and type 4 to delete a file:

    Select each data-containing file and confirm the deletion. Repeat this as necessary:

    Type 0 to reboot the system:

  5. Copy all the output from the session into your records.

    Right-click PuTTY's titlebar, from that dropdown menu click on "Copy All to Clipboard"
    Open the file of record certifying the deconfiguration of this device and use CTRL V to paste all the output from PuTTY into that file. Formatting the text with a fixed-width font helps it look more readable.
  6. End the session.

    Close PuTTy.
