3Com 4210G 48-port

  1. Start the console session.

    Plug in serial cable to device from PC COM1 port
    Open PuTTY and select "Serial" connection type, change baud rate (Speed) to 19200 and leave other settings as default.
    Plug power into device and if a power button exists, turn it on.
  2. Access the BOOT MENU

    Press Ctrl B when prompted to, and before the countdown ends.

    Before you are prompted for a choice from that menu it states whether a BootRom password is required and whether Password recovery capability is enabled. This guide will presume no for the former and yes for the latter:
    BootRom password: Not required. Please press Enter to continue. Password recovery capability is enabled. BOOT MENU 1. Download application file to flash 2. Select application file to boot 3. Display all files in flash 4. Delete file from flash 5. Restore to factory default configuration 6. Enter bootrom upgrade menu 7. Skip current configuration file 8. Reserved 9. Set switch startup mode 0. Reboot Ctrl+F: Format File System Ctrl+D: Enter Debugging Mode Ctrl+T: Enter Board Test Environment Enter your choice(0-9):
    Do not choose option 5 yet, because to perform that operation Password recovery capability must first be disabled.
  3. Disable the Password recovery capability and reboot.

    A restart ignoring the current configuration is needed, so choose option 7 and confirm with y:
    Enter your choice(0-9): 7 The current setting will boot with current configuration file when rebooted. Are you sure you want to skip the current configuration file when rebooting? Yes or No(Y/N) y Setting......done!
    When the menu prompt appears again, choose option 0:

    Further output with bring you to the <4210G> prompt. Type the system-view command for elevated privileges, then the undo password-recovery enable command, followed by the commands quit and save (just press Enter when prompted to input the file name) and reboot confirming with y each time.

  4. Restore configuration to factory defaults and reboot.

    Press Ctrl B again when prompted, this time choose option 5 from the boot menu and confirm with y

    When the menu prompt appears again, choose option 0 and allow the boot process to complete:

    Further output will bring you to the Press ENTER to get started. prompt. Pressing Enter will bring you to the Login authentication.
  5. Check that logging in with default credentials works.

    Type admin at the Username: prompt and just press Enter at the Password: prompt, as it is blank by default.

    Do not continue, just turn off/unplug the device.
  6. Copy all the output from the session into your records.

    Right-click PuTTY's titlebar, from that dropdown menu click on "Copy All to Clipboard"
    Open the file of record certifying the deconfiguration of this device and use CTRL V to paste all the output from PuTTY into that file. Formatting the text with a fixed-width font helps it look more readable.
  7. End the session.

    Close PuTTy.
